Mark this day as another that will go down in History as an "AWESOME NEW FEATURE" added to the ActiveRain Network. We have added and are rolling out Twitter auto-feeds for your AR Blog posts. If you have a Twitter account already, you can set yours up now. If you don't, you'll need to go to Twitter.com and set one up. It will take less than a minute.
What is Twitter? It's micro-blogging. "Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email."
Setting Up Twitter on ActiveRain:
The process for setting up your Twitter Account on ActiveRain will literally take you 10 seconds.

sawweeetttt... I love to tweet! :-) You guys ROCK! @RailLife
Hey Brad,
Interesting...still trying to figure this Twitter thing out for myself. Obviously I'm behind the curve on this one. I heard so much about it at BlogWorld last week I decided to sign up, now I'm not sure how to move forward. At this point, I'll just stay tuned.
Thanks Nick, Jorgen was instrumental in making this happen, he is the man and get's all the credit for this one! :-)
Awesome feature!
For more on what Twitter is and how it relates to real estate check out my post on GeekEstate Blog I posted this morning - http://www.geekestateblog.com/social-media-in-real-estate-%E2%80%93-part-1-twitter/
Lynda - there are some great posts on AR from other members using Twitter very successfully, just search tags for "Twitter" and you'll get some really great posts from members like Missy, Rich, and many others.
BTW - nice to hear from you, hope all is well. :-)
You just had to force me to twitter didnt you!
James - are you trying to hijack my post? I'll check out your link and post, but it better be good or you get the spam squad! lol~ :-)
Cool, just set it up and I'm off an running. Maybe this will force me to "tweet" more often?
Eau Claire - No force, just more options for members, that's how we like to roll around here. :-)
Brad did you see my post about this earlier today? I wrote about how to get the application for facebook to send your twitter feed onto facebook. Check it out yo!
I keep forgetting about my twitter account. Being a new parent has sapped my time and I'm glad there is now an app that will help me cut done on processes.
This is an awesome feature. I have not spent a lot of time on twitter -- so now I have a good reason to do so.
YAY!!!!!!! Thanks AR!
I'm afraid I've become addicted to Twitter. This is a great thing, Jorgen, thank you!
DONE in 8.5 seconds and way to cool .. thanks for building a bigger and better mouse trap.
What will you guys come up with next... I've been manually updating... so excited! Thanks
Love this for ActiveRain.
Hate that more feeds will infiltrate @Twitter.
Jussayin. I link up my favorites or ones I think people will be interested in reading. If people feed to twitter member's only posts and your locals can't read it ... hum?
Great idea by the AR Team to integrate with Twitter. This brings our content to a whole new group of readers.
Thanks once again, Brad. I have just taken on GoogleDocs, thanks to you, and now this. ou are a super asset to the AR community!
I do have a question, however, and maybe others are wondering the same thing. When these sites ask for the RSS feed for ActiveRain, what is the correct response? Example, when setting up GoogleDocs, it asks for the RSSfeed and then the link to my home page.
Frances Sanderson, Franklin, NH REALTOR®, Certified EcoBroker®
Brad - Yeah for AR for their embrace of Twitter. My two requests...
Other than that - Yeah!
Twitter: @MikeMueller
Thanks for the update. I will take a look at this new site. Seems like it could be fun.
Gross. Now there will be a bunch of AR blogs spamming twitter. If you don't interact on twitter but just use it to syndicate your posts you don't "get" twitter, imho.
Jeremy - I'll check it out in a bit, guess that means we're right on track eh? :-))
This is an awesome feature that I updated this morning! Thanks for the new feature, makes life so much easier.
Love this for ActiveRain. Hate that more feeds will infiltrate @Twitter. Jussayin. I link up my favorites or ones I think people will be interested in reading. If people feed to twitter member's only posts and your locals can't read it ... hum?
Kim - you'll only see the feeds of those you follow. Have you any Idea how many feeds infiltrate Twitter right now? Consumers and Businesses, even polititians have caught on and are joining and twitting. Jeff Turner and RE Shows must post a few hundred each day, but I still follow, because Jeff is the Bomb.
Regarding the Members Only tweets, It won't work for non-members so we may have to look at customizing that along with allowing members to select the posts they want to tweet in the "create new post" screen or mode. :-)
Right on B-Rad! I love Twitter. It took me a few months to really "get" it, but now I am lovin' the Tweets :)
Thanks once again, Brad. I have just taken on GoogleDocs, thanks to you, and now this. you are a super asset to the AR community! I do have a question, however, and maybe others are wondering the same thing. When these sites ask for the RSS feed for ActiveRain, what is the correct response? Example, when setting up GoogleDocs, it asks for the RSSfeed and then the link to my home page.
Frances - The RSS feed is a button/chicklet you'll find on your sidebar. If you right click your mouse on it, you can copy the link location to provide to any other site. There is also an RSS icon in your URL address bar of your browser. EXAMPLE: Mine would be http://activeRain.com/Blogs/ActiveBrad/RSS Just replace my user name with yours and that's your RSS feed to your AR Blog. Hope that helps. :-)
Mike - excellent suggestions. I think we should add a box to check when creating new Blog posts. Adding it to the sidebar is also an excellent idea, I know members can do that now by adding a "Follow Me" link or by adding the Twitter Widget like I have on my sidebar. Great ideas and suggestions, always love the feedback and comments. Thanks. :-)
Brad- I like Mikes Idea too! I just finished taking the past 2 hours to get my feedburner all working properly.
Gross. Now there will be a bunch of AR blogs spamming twitter. If you don't interact on twitter but just use it to syndicate your posts you don't "get" twitter, imho.
Maureen - with all due respect, I have to disagree. Twitter is also used as a tool to share information with those that follow you. Engaging in Micro-Blogging is just one aspect of how twitter works. I don't see this a only syndicating posts, I see it as a tool to help members remove one step that are doing this already (like me) and I also see it as a way to drive more viewers to your Blog which potentially increases relationships and business. Many members are already using this as a tool anyway, why not make it easier for them to do more by doing less. Thanks for sharing your comments and opinion, they are always welcomed on my posts. :-))
Here's some stats on twitter members, isn't this already a lot of SPAM by the rest of the world? Why should AR members be left out in all the fun? LOL~
March 2008 Total Users:
1+ million Total Active
Users: 200,000 per week
Total Twitter Messages: 3 million/day
I heard about this just yesterday. Very cool addition to AR.
As if I did not feel old enough not knowing what a blog was until recently...now I am susposed to twit.....What will my mother think????? Can I get fired for doing "it" at work???? Please help I've twitted and I can't get up or off the computer.....whichever
Happy Monday...

opps I guess I forgot to log in again...I guess I am showing my age hahahahaha

Thanks Brad! Your instructions are always clear and easy to follow!
Brad,
I saw this feature the other day and I am still trying to learn it, so I can maximize my usage of the program.

Hi Brad. In an effort to enhance my online presence, I opened both a twitter account and a myspace account last night. I have no clue what I am doing, but I will figure it out!
Thanks for writing,
Ken
Brad- Are all our new Posts posted there? No choices at this Point?
Kathy - no. Only your new posts will be Twittered on an ongoing basis if you choose to enable that option. :-)
Hi Brad. I followed the instructions. Very easy and now a post I wrote this morning is on Twitter!
Thanks again,
Ken
Brad - This is really a great feature that AR provides, no more double work or trying to keep it under 140 characters. I've been streamlining my blogs with facebook too.
Brad, this is great... I haven't quite fully got on board the twitter bandwagon yet, but I'm trying.
I just saw that I think I want to do this but will it put too much on Twitter so people don't communicate there it is just a place to announce where you are really active?
"Mark this day as another that will go down in History as an "AWESOME NEW FEATURE" added to the ActiveRain Network."
Yes sir, but how did my password magically appear?
Terry - check out the stats and members I posted in the above comment, there's no way the entire network could put too much on Twitter. :-)
"Mark this day as another that will go down in History as an "AWESOME NEW FEATURE" added to the ActiveRain Network." Yes sir, but how did my password magically appear?
To the person who made this comment, we're just good! LOL~ :-)
Brad, I am sure I will thank you for this later, I am still trying to understand how to hook my blackberry to twitter. I have not achieved that yet. So I am sure this hook up will be more challenging. But thank you anyway for forcing me to keep up with the world.
Endre - Download TwitterBerry from your BlackBerry. Visit http://orangatame.com/ota/twitterberry/ on your BlackBerry. I think this should get you set on your way. Let me know how that works for you. :-)
Way cool!
Apparently I need to set up a twitter account. I don't want to be left behind in this technology. Thanks for posting.
Hi Brad. Is there an easy way to do this to myspace and facebook?? So much to learn??
Ken
Thank YOU its done!!
So, if I am already doing this via Twitterfeed, is there a purpose?
I'm just askin'
Thanks for the update. What I really appreciated was the links at the bottom to Twitter Apps and Twitstat.
What a coinsidence, I just set up an account yesterday and been busy figuring it out and building a network. Wow, I think I'll follow Bill Gates too :)
GOSH BRAD, I can barely keep up with all this techo!!! Oh, BTW, I see that you've got me on your background page...duh, I just noticed. Way cool!!!
Brad...
I'm baaa-aaack :) Ok... y'all know I love ActiveRain dearly.... but there was a lot of conversation this afternoon on Twitter after I started discussing it. I like what Mike Mueller said ^^^ up there....
- Make it an option per blog post, like your other checkboxes maybe?
Every post is not 'twitter worthy' especially with the member's only ones. You are right - there are tons of feeds that go into twitter. I'm not mentioning names, but a few statements today:
- If the people from AR that aren't using twitter just start posting feeds, they are getting unfollowed without thought.
- If people are posting feeds and don't participate - GONE!
- People that post a lot on ActiveRain I will unfollow.
I follow certain newsfeeds that have random updates. The ones that post 15 feeds in a row - GONE. The politicians that I follow - same thing. I love when friends/followers tell us on Twitter that they have a new post (be it on AR or elsewhere) - but not every single time.
Again, I think it is a good thing for ActiveRain and the writers. I didn't diss that - just looking from a @Twitterite - it stinks that people won't know what they are doing - and use the button - then they'll miss out on Twitter and many will unfollow.
Brad, thanks for the update as well. John Walters and I were just going over Twitter this morning. This post is right on time.
amen @kimwood!
Oh Boy! When I get around to trying to figure this one out, you'll be SORRY! Thanks for pointing me to Mike Mueller for the help I needed - the video is up and (I hope) running - At least it is working for me, I can actually SEE it on my post!
Now for this Twitter thingy.....
Debi
Brad - updated my settings and then wrote a blog...but haven't seen it in twitter yet...how long does it take?
Don't we have to remain logged in on Twitter for this to work? Because I have 2 Twitter accounts. One of them has all my You Tube buddies on it and I don't want them to know my last name, or any personal info. So I log back and forth. Will that mess up the feed if I embed it on AR?
Very cool, Brad - I am going to do that right now. Thank you sooo much. (You are always a wealth of information!)
Mary
Brad - Cool development. Changed my settings tonight. Thanks !!
Brad, pretty cool stuff.....it just never gets boring around here....gotta like that! Thanks for the good directions....all set up!
Brad - No hi-jacking here! Just figured the two posts went great together :) Hope you enjoyed it. I don't want the spam squad after me!
Thank you as always Brad for making Active Rain the place to be!
Yvette - now that the customizer is up and working, I have changed my background. I am experimenting to see what works best and goes with the mood of the week. :-)
Ken - maybe in time, we can add this same option for the other popular social networks as well. It would be great to have this for FaceBook, FriendFeed, Plaxo, MySpace etc. Well, maybe not MySpace...lol~ :-)
Lane - the purpose is so it will remove that one additional step that you're doing already. It is optional so you can continue to do it the way yu are already too. :-)
Brad, Is twitter the reason we are having so much trouble in the Rain these days? I can't seem to get a comment in without having to go to the home page. Pretty frustrating.
Just a quick update. I got an error msg after posting the above comment, and it took me 6 more error msgs to get back here. I'm done for the day.
Kim - you make some great points, I would hope that people would only use this option that understand Twitter and how it works. In addition to being selective on which posts to promote on Twitter, hopefully they will engage and see the value of micro-blogging there as well. We'll have to see how this plays out, but I think it's a step in the right direction. Eventually, it would be nice to have the other social networks available as an option to "Feed" information to as well.
Debi - I knew if anyone could figure out the code in that HTML, it would be Mike. Glad you got that fixed. :-)
Dora and Vincent - It should be nearly instant. I noticed my last post took about 2 minutes to show up on twitter, this post showed up instantly.
Lisa - you can set it up with whatever account you want. It won't mess anything up on twitter as it is just a feed to twitter, you do not have to be logged into twitter, by using the feature on your my settings page, it logs into twitter for you. Just use the account that works best for you. :-)
James - after further review, I have called off the Spam Squad, your link and post were related to the topic and since I am a contributor to the GeekEstate, and think Zipvo has a pretty cool product, I have retracted my comment and threat to have the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits! That was a great post you wrote, thanks for sharing it there and here. :-))
Bob - I feel your pain and no, the twitter addition is not why we are having proxy errors and issues these past couple days. I know they are working on it 24/7 to get it corrected. Thanks for your patience and I apologize for the inconvenience. It's frustrating I know, I am on here all day and night and experiencing many ALL the same issues as our members. We'll get it resolved. :-)
This Comment stream has been a good conversation, Brad. I second the motion to have a checkbox to select whether we want to Twitter a post as part of the posting menu. That would be a great refinement of this terrific feature. The AR evolution continues!

You guys never stop, do you? You keep coming up with new perks... You are going to make us too successful.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This is AWESOME! I'll go check it out.
Can we re-blog this?
Elaine - I agree 100% and will do my best to make sure this happens. I know that our guys have their hands full right now, but this request is most certainly on the table for implementation. Thanks for commenting and stopping by, it's always great to see you.
Mirela - dare I say WOW?!?!? LOL!~ With a comment like that, you bet I'll let you reblog it, 2 minutes and it should be good to go, and just for you! :-))
Thanks Brad! Done and you're being 'followed'! HA!
Debe - catch me if you can... haha! :-)
Wow...that's cool. I'll check into setting up a twitter account and testing this. Thanks
Hi Brad - Now I know why my first two attempts did not work...the post were set to members only. Its seems that members only post are not sent to Twitter.
I changed the post to Public and it showed up as a Tweet in Twitter.
Gabe Strom did a video about Twitter, this might help some of you not familiar with the micro-blogging social network platform. Using twitter as a tool and understanding how it really works is important before you just go sending all your AR post feeds and announcements there. You should use what Jeff Turner referred to on a phone call last night, as the 12:1 ratio. 12 tweets about others, 1 tweet about self.
Loved that we had some time to chat Jeff, always do, thanks. :-)
Dora - the jury is still out on the "members only" posts being twittered. I know there are many REALTORS® and Industry Pros on Twitter, but if they are not a member of AR, they get a webpage that isn't very welcoming, maybe that Non Member page should have the option to sign up on AR? Still thinking that one through. If I clicked on a twitter feed link and it brought me to a page I couldn't view all the time, after a while, I'd probably stop following that person. Just a thought while the jury is out to lunch...make that drinks. LOL~ :-)
Brad - Great video! thanks for posting that! Did Jeff Turner or Chris Brogan come up with the 12:1 first?? Chris had it on a post that I quoted in my post about Twitter streaming yesterday :) They both ROCK !
@Kim - I think Chris Brogan did come up with it first, and Jeff was just sharing the concept and idea behind it with me. I think it's a great idea and should be applied by all, unfortunately, some people don't get how it works and end up hurting their efforts more than helping their business and relationships.
Here's Twitter, in plain English. The basics for anyone not familiar with Twitter:
Missy Caulk shared this video in a post back in August from Wallstrip. Where is this twitter thing really going in the future? Will it have a place and value on WallStreet? It's entertaining $ fun. Thanks Missy. :-)
Cool... and what a link building tool for A/R
Riel - everybody wins!! :-) I was doing some of these manually already anyway. Even posted today, then twittered it after because I forgot this was in place! DOH!! lol~
Pam - and your vote counts for sure! Big Smile!!
Another thing I need to get up to speed on is Twitter. Good article in Popular Science this month also!
Garren - can you send me a link or post it in a comment here? You have my blessings! Thanks. :-)
Cheryl - just make sure to feel out the twitterville network so you don't come across as a spammer. Those who only post their Blog stuff and nothing else, tend to not get too great of following. There are some great posts on AR about Twitter, just click on the serach box at the top of the screen and type Twitter, you'll see what I mean. Have fun. :-)
Georgina - welcome to TwitterRain or ActiveVille, there are some great reason to be on twitter and now we have made it easy to incorporate your posts there along with your other activities on twitter. Enjoy.
Georgina - it tests out great. Have fun and welcome to the world of Twitter. :-)
Thanks, Brad!
I just figured out another cool application to add usage to twitter...now mine goes to myspace. I just wrote about it on my blog. Very cool stuff!
Jeremy - that's pretty cool stuff, not much of a myspace fan myself, but cool none-the-less! :-)
Tamara - Sell Real Estate first, then come back and share with others how you did it and your experiences, your discoveries, all that you learn from your efforts, that's the best way to keep up and sell Real Estate at the same time as learning. The technology piece is great, it's a wonderful tool, but selling Real Estate is obviously your #1 priority.
Thanks for the info Brad, as well as everyone responding to Brad's post! I am going to be setting up a twitter account and wanted to see what it was all about before I went and signed up.
Brad - I've been using this feature since you rolled it out... LOVE IT! Thank you for adding even more value to this "FREE" Platform... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...
Jeff - having a twitter account is a must in the social media and networking world. Learning the network and the environment is the next most important item on your list, at least it should be. :-)
Debbie - I like this feature too. I think using the suggested ratio's of different posts to twitter is the key. You can't just twitter when you do a new post. I think many will miss the business and personal connection if that's all they do. :-)
Jean - it's ok if you're 73, the tech stuff will never go away. Good for you that you're plugging away at all this techno stuff. You're keeping up with the fast paced world and that is very cool. :-)
Eva - I have only been on there for a few months now. Rumor has it that just like email, everyone will eventually have a twitter account. I wonder if it will just replace IM and text messaging? Why not, it's FREE and so much more effective. :-)
Hi Brad, any ideas on how to localize my search for people I may want to start following?
Thanks for the info let's Twitter!
Wondering if anyone can help me out. I've set my username and password in Activerain setting for my Twitter account. But when I go to Twitter, it shows none of my activerain posts or anything from y active rain account.
Anythings I can check to get this working?
Easy, peasy. Thanks! I'm still new to Twitter, but figure it can only help in the long run.
Brad-YOU ROCK! Thanks for the info
Rocha Team - there are a TON of tutorials on AR how to use twitter. Just search Twitter on AR, or go join the group here on AR. Both will help you out incredibly.
Be sure to check out the videos in the comments of this post too. They will help as well.
Pam - make sure you have your username and password right, nothing will happen till you do your next post, and it won't go to twitter if its a members only post. (unless you check the box in setup) Let me know if you have any problems with it when you do your next post.
Jake - there is a Local Twitter site that will find only those within x amount of miles of you, I think it's called Twinkle or something like that. I know there are some links to it in my Diigo.com bookmarks if you want to check it out.
Jon - nothing will happen till you post the next time. It doesn't syndicate all your AR posts to twitter like an RSS feed, it will only affect what you post from now on. Hope that makes sense.
Lori - help is right here, easy...easy! (Big Smile) Start with a deep breathe, exhale through the nose, now take a couple aspirin, and call me in the morning. Serious, I'll help you set it up and get it working for you fair enough? :-)
Thanks for the update. No more excuses. Now it is too easy to ignore. HA.
Lori - ahhhhhwww shucks. Thanks. Call me anytime. :-)
Crystal -Twitter down? nah nah nah!! Maybe that's why some folks are having TWEET issues. LOL~ It will be back up soon enough, I promise. :-)
I set it up a few weeks ago and it worked fine for a while
now it is NOT working anymore
Does anybody have an idea?
Thanks
Anne
Anne - YOU BROKE IT!! :-O Just kidding. I better have a look see and try to figure out what you did. You might need to call me and give me your login info so I can check it out for you. Thanks. :-))
I am going to sign of for Twitter now. Interested to see how this works.
Brad, I must be doing something wrong. My twitter settinga are correect - not protected.
My active rain settings appear correct.
But it does not work. I posted to my blog and nothing in twitter.
I'm wondering about this wording: "When you create a new post now (if enabled)" from your post. When I post to my blog I click blog then click "New Blog Entry". Is "create a new post now" something different and why would it not already be enabled?
I'm lost.
Paul Howard
This still doesn't work for me and I've been posting new blogs for a while now. I had one post show up in twitter once, but nothng since.
I've changed my password, logged out, then back in to make sure I had it right, updated it in active rain, and still nothing.
I had an email from active rain support about it and then never got back to me after I let them know it still was not working.
Paul and Jon - we are aware of the twitter component not working at the present time. It's not you, it something we are working on to get corrected. We will have it fixed along with many of the other issues being fixed right now. See Jeff Corbett's featured post today regarding the network and the corrections we are making and why. Thanks for your patience, this too shall pass. :-)
Brian - synergy is a good thing. Be sure to also check out the "TwitterLike Function" now located on City pages of ActiveRain. I don't think alot of members even know it's there. It's not twitter, but very similar and could be useful to you in your area. Hope you'll check it out. :-)
I must admit that I do have a twitter and mysteriously have a few dozen followers, but have never really figured out how to use it or subscribed to anyone else. Not sure I really want to hear updates about other people and what they are doing.
Adding my thanks for great instrctions on the tech side of real estate!
THANK YOU!
Brad, If I have the feed to Twitter set up, what happens to my Members Only posts? Do they get fed, too? I am going to do some research, but sometimes you can save a lot of time by going right to the expert!
Never mind, Brad. I just went in to my Twitter settings on AR and saw that there is an option NOT to share member only posts. You guys think of everything!
Hi Holly - glad you got it worked out. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. :-)
Hi Jim - you'll need to use just your twitter login name and password associated with your twitter account.
Hey Jim - the URL is just your AR user name from when you signed up on AR. We can change it for you, but you could lose some of your links that direct back to the old user name if we do. If you're ok with that, let me know, and I'll change your user name to "activerain.com/neighborly" if it's available on the network. B~)
Jim - changes have been made. Your new profile name and domain her is http://activerain.com/neighborly. Enjoy!!
